Phil Rowan
Phil teaches our Music Together program exclusively at Kiddie Korner's Clinton Street location to the teachers, babies, and children there. Those classes are not open to the public. However, parents of children who attend Phil's classes are entitled to attend any of Naomi's classes on Remsen Street, free of charge. Born
in Richmond, VA, raised in São Paulo, Brazil, and brought back to NY,
Phil Rowan started formal instruction on the bass guitar at age 13. He
joined his high school’s string orchestra, as well as the jazz band,
and began private study on the double bass while also playing in a rock
band with his brother. He also played in the orchestra pit for several
of his school’s musicals, his first experience playing with
professionals. Towards the end of high school he took part in the New
York State Summer School for the Arts’ School of Orchestral Studies,
where he received instruction from Hal Robinson, principal bassist of
the Philadelphia Orchestra. He also took part in the NYSSSA Jazz
Studies Program, where he received instruction from Todd Coolman, Pat
and John LaBarbera, and Curtis Fuller. Around the same time, he
started playing local gigs and enrolled in the jazz studies program at
Purchase College, where he earned a Bachelor’s degree in Music. While
pursuing his studies, he quickly became in demand both at school and on
gigs in the area, and continued performing classical music in the
Purchase Symphony Orchestra. Based in NYC since graduating in 2004,
Phil continues to broaden his studies in classical music under the
mentorship of Rachel Calin, and can be heard and seen performing
throughout the greater NY region in a variety of musical settings.
Phil keeps busy as a composer, listener, student, and as a teacher of Music Together in several locations.
